Polybead Anti-Slip Additive | Least Change Appearance | Easy to Clean & Use | 2 Grit Sizes

SSR-20 Polybeads are an Anti-Slip polyproplyene micro aggregate designed to provide an easy to use and clean non-slip, skid resistant surface for 2 component epoxy, polyaspartic, polyurethane, urethane and most floor coatings without using a surface broadcast method or sand.  It is lightweight, low density and insoluble which reduces or eliminates settling and allows for easy mixing into a floor coating before application of the coating.

The rounded shape of the Polybeads allow for excellent abrasion resistance with less impact on gloss levels and minimizes the change in surface appearance vs alternative anti-slip additives.  It is less abrasive compared to aluminum oxide, garnet or silica sand and other more abrasive additives, allowing for easier surface cleaning.

The SSR-20 polybeads only require small amounts to impart a surface profile for non-skid when the mixed coating is applied to a surface.  The SSR is incorporated in two component products when the SSR-20 is mixed into Parts A and B and is distributed through the coating during the mixing process as well as when the mixed product is applied to a surface The Action of rolling the coating brings the aggregate closer to the surface of the coating, providing an aggressive non-skid surface while offering a completely encapsulated aggregate that is well bonded into the matrix of the coating.

Aggressiveness of the SSR-20 anti-slip profile may be increased by using the 20 grit sized polybead and adding more aggregate or reduced by using less aggregate and the smaller 50 grit size polybead.

Comes packaged in 1 lb.  Usage varies with coating and level of non-slip required.  Usage also influences the visibility of the aggregate , so smaller amounts for clear coatings is suggested. The SSR-20 comes in 2 grit sizes, 20 grit and 50 grit.   Which grit size to use depends on how aggressive you want the anti-slip surface to be.  Most commonly used is the 20 grit size.   The 50 grit is the smaller of the two grit bead sizes and is only for use when a very mild anti-slip surface is desired.  It takes more of the 50 grit size polybead to equal the same anti slip impact as 20 grit size.

How Much to Purchase? Start with 2 heaping tablespoons per gallon mixed into top coat up to 10 per gallon.  Increase as required. Recommend small test to understand how much SSR-20 additive will produce your desired results.  As more is used the SSR-20 provides greater anti-slip but see it more, lowers gloss level and harder to keep clean.

SELECT BEST MIX OF USAGE AND GRIT SIZE FOR YOUR REQUIREMENTS. FROM LEAST TO MOST AGGRESSIVE:

  • SSR-20 (2 grit sizes) are round polybeads that are the least aggressive, least visible and easiest to apply anti-slip.  They are a lightweight additive mixed into the topcoat while mixing Parts A and B.  Not recommended for use in heavy duty commercial or industrial applications where an aggressive anti-slip surface and safety are the primary concern vs visual appearance.
  • Silica (4 grit sizes) is a low cost anti-slip for a more aggressive anti-slip protection. It is a heavier additive that is typically broadcast into the topcoat while wet and then backrolled so it is encapsulated by the coating.  It is also more visible and harder to clean than the SSR-20.  It is most commonly used in commercial and industrial applications.
  • Garnet (1 grit size) is a low cost anti-slip that is not quite as hard or tough as aluminum oxide but a step up from silica sand in terms of durability and anti-slip safety.  It comes in dark brown color so needs to be used in pigment coatings only.
  • Aluminum Oxide (4 grit sizes) is a very tough mineral used for maximum anti-slip protection.  It is the longest lasting, most durable anti-slip aggregate offering the greatest degree of safety.  However it will also be the most visible and most difficult to keep clean and is not recommended for use in applications where people are walking on it in bare feet. Aluminum oxide is typically broadcast into the topcoat while wet and then backrolled so it is encapsulated by the coating.   It is used primarily in heavy duty commercial and industrial applications.

What is a polybead anti-slip additive?

A polybead anti-slip additive (like SSR-20) is a lightweight, rounded polypropylene micro-aggregate designed to create a non-slip surface in coatings without heavily changing the appearance.

Unlike sand or aluminum oxide, polybeads are smoother, less abrasive, and easier to clean, making them ideal for decorative and residential coatings.

How does SSR-20 polybead create a non-slip surface?

Polybeads are mixed directly into the coating (not broadcast). As the coating is rolled out, the beads rise toward the surface and create texture while remaining encapsulated in the coating.

This results in:

  • Consistent texture
  • Strong bonding within the coating
  • Reduced risk of aggregate shedding

What coatings can polybeads be used with?

SSR-20 polybeads are compatible with:

  • Epoxy coatings
  • Polyaspartic coatings
  • Polyurethane & urethane coatings
  • Most 2-component floor systems

This makes them a versatile anti-slip solution across residential and light commercial applications.

What is the difference between 20 grit and 50 grit polybeads?

20 grit polybeads

  • More aggressive slip resistance
  • Most commonly used
  • Better for garages, patios, and wet areas

50 grit polybeads

  • Finer, smoother texture
  • Less visible
  • Ideal for decorative or interior floors

Important: You’ll need more 50 grit to achieve the same traction as 20 grit.

How much polybead additive should I use?

Typical usage:

  • Start with 2 heaping tablespoons per gallon
  • Increase up to 10 tablespoons per gallon depending on desired traction

Tip:
Always test first — more additive =
✔ more slip resistance
❌ lower gloss
❌ more visible texture

Does polybead change the look of my floor?

Polybeads are designed for minimal visual impact:

  • Less noticeable than sand or aluminum oxide
  • Maintains more gloss than aggressive aggregates
  • Ideal for clear or decorative coatings

However, higher amounts will:

  • Reduce gloss
  • Increase visibility

Is polybead better than silica sand or aluminum oxide?

Additive

Slip Resistance

Appearance

Cleanability

Best Use

Polybeads (SSR-20) Mild–Moderate Least visible Easiest 1/2″
Silica Sand Moderate–High More visible Harder to clean 1/2″
Aluminum Oxide Very High Most visible Hardest to clean 1/2″

Polybeads are the best choice when aesthetics + cleanability matter, while heavier aggregates are better for maximum safety in industrial environments. Check out our Aluminum Oxide and Silica Sand page to review those options for your project.

Where should you use polybead anti-slip additive?

Common applications include:

  • Garage floors
  • Decorative epoxy floors
  • Pool decks & patios
  • Stairs and entryways
  • Balconies and walkways
  • Light commercial floors

Where should you NOT use polybeads?

Polybeads are not recommended when:

  • You need maximum anti-slip safety (industrial settings)
  • Heavy machinery or oil exposure is present
  • OSHA-level traction is required

In those cases, use aluminum oxide or silica sand instead.

Is polybead anti-slip safe for bare feet?

Yes — one of the biggest advantages:

  • Smooth, rounded particles
  • Less abrasive than sand or aluminum oxide
  • More comfortable for barefoot traffic

This makes it ideal for:

  • Residential garages
  • Pool decks
  • Interior coatings

Does polybead settle in the coating?

No — SSR-20 is:

  • Lightweight and low density
  • Designed to stay suspended during mixing and application

This ensures even distribution without constant remixing.

Will polybead affect coating performance?

No — it:

  • Does not change physical properties of the coating
  • Remains fully encapsulated
  • Maintains coating integrity

Does adding polybeads reduce gloss?

Yes — slightly.

More additive =

  • Lower gloss
  • More texture visibility

This is true for all anti-slip additives, not just polybeads.

What makes polybeads different from other anti-slip additives?

Key advantages:

  • No broadcast required (easier install)
  • More uniform finish
  • Better cleanability
  • Less visible texture
  • Comfortable underfoot

Tradeoff:

  • Less aggressive traction than heavier aggregates

Pro Tips

  • Always test a small batch first
  • Start light — you can always add more
  • Use 20 grit for most projects
  • Use 50 grit for clear or decorative coatings
  • Mix thoroughly into Parts A + B before application

Still not sure which anti-slip additive to use?

Choosing the right additive depends on:

  • Safety requirements
  • Appearance expectations
  • Cleaning needs
  • Environment (wet, oily, etc.)
