Product Description

Silica Anti-Slip Additive | 5 Mesh Sizes

Our Silica Anti-slip aggregate is used to provide increased slip resistance to epoxy, polyurea and polyaspartic floor coating systems and improve safety when surface is wet. Silica can provides a low cost, aggressive option to project requirements to protect against a wet slippery surface.  Not meant for thin film acrylic systems.

Silica when used in a full broadcast to refusal application adds an exceptionally tough, chip resistant performance for heavy use industrial and commercial projects and is applied at 50 lbs every 100 sq’ of surface area.  Full broadcast application requires heavy coat of a clear epoxy or polyaspartic topcoat at 100 sq’/gallon typically to fully encapsulate the silica and basecoat epoxy for full broadcast is typically also applied at 100 sq’/gallon.

Sold in 4 lb, 44 lb and 50 lb containers, our Anti-Slip Silica comes in 4 mesh sizes:  small grain sized 50-70 mesh (50 lb size), 40-60 mesh (50 lb size) and larger grain sized 20-40 mesh ( both 4 lb and 50 lb size) which is our most popular grain size and largest 10-40 mesh (50 lb size) as well as a pre-mixed 50% 20-40 mesh and 50% 40-60 mesh blend (44 lb size).   Mesh size recommended and usage quantity varies with coating and level of non-slip required.

Anti-slip aggregates are used primarily to reduce the risk of falls from a wet, slippery surface.  How much anti-slip aggregate to use involves a trade-off between safety, visual appearance and ability to keep clean.  Anti-slip aggregates will reduce the sheen level of a coating and become more visible the greater the application rate.  They can also make it harder to keep clean. Users need to determine there own requirements as every application is different.

Usage varies widely from a low of 1 lb for every 1,000 sq’ typically used for lighter duty residential applications to as much as 1 lb for every 1 to 2 gallons of topcoat on higher risk  or commercial and industrial applications and for the most aggressive surface profile broadcasting silica sand to refusal using 50 lbs every 100 sq’ floor area when safety is a paramount importance.  Can Increase/decrease as required for more or less anti-slip profile. Recommend small test to understand how much additive will produce your desired results.

Select best mix of usage and grit size for your requirements. From least to most aggressive:

  • SSR-20 (2 sizes) are round polybeads that are the least aggressive, least visible and easiest to apply anti-slip.  They are a lightweight additive mixed into the topcoat while mixing Parts A and B. Not recommended for use in heavy duty commercial or industrial applications where an aggressive anti-slip surface and safety are the primary concern vs visual appearance.
  • Silica (5 mesh sizes) is a low cost anti-slip for a more aggressive anti-slip protection. It is a heavier additive that is typically broadcast into the topcoat while wet and then backrolled so it is encapsulated by the coating.  It is also more visible and harder to clean than the SSR-20.  It is most commonly used in commercial and industrial applications.
  • Garnet (1 grit size) is a low cost anti-slip that is not quite as hard or tough as aluminum oxide but a step up from silica sand in terms of durability and anti-slip safety.  It comes in brown color so needs to be used in pigment coatings only.
  • Aluminum Oxide (4 grit sizes and 2 colors) is a very tough mineral used for maximum anti-slip protection.  It is the longest lasting, most durable anti-slip aggregate offering the greatest degree of safety.  However it will also be the most visible and most difficult to keep clean and is not recommended for use in applications where people are walking on it in bare feet. Aluminum oxide is typically broadcast into the topcoat while wet and then backrolled so it is encapsulated by the coating.   It is used primarily in heavy duty commercial and industrial applications.
