Times will be longer for films thicker than 3 mils.   For safety and proper product curing, good ventilation is necessary when painting indoors or in confined areas.  Be sure the batch numbers are all the same to provide uniform color.  Epoxy coatings may yellow or darken during application and after final cure.  This will affect the color but will have no effect on the performance of the product.  Heaters that emit carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide can cause the coating to yellow.

MIXING AND APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

SURFACE PREPARATION

Concrete: Remove all laitance, efflorescence, chemical containments, grease, oil, old paint and other foreign matter. The prepared surface must be clean, dry and structurally sound. Diamond grinding or water blasting may be necessary to achieve the proper profile. Acid etch or other chemical treatments should be evaluated.  Consult us for details of specific tests pertaining to acceptable pH and surface porosity. In all cases of surface preparation, the ph should be checked. A water dissipation test and a vapor barrier test should be run. Do not apply to slabs on grade unless a heavy unruptured vapor barrier has been installed under the slab.

MIXING INSTRUCTIONS

E211 is prepared by mixing 1 part Base (Part A) to 1 part Hardener (Part B) with an explosion proof variable speed drill and Jiffy mixer. Allow an induction time of 15 minutes before using. E211 may be thinned up to 10% with SA-50. Overthinning reduces the high film build capability.

Roller – Use a 3/8″ -1/2″ short nap phenolic core, shed resistant roller cover. Roll in the same direction always keeping a wet edge. Do not over roll product.

Brush– Use pure bristle brush

When spraying, use a 50% overlapping crosshatch pattern to minimize the occurence of pinholes. Do not apply to surfaces below 50F or above 95F. Do not apply over dew or frost. Do not apply if the temperature is within 5° of the Dew Point.

CAUTIONS

E211 is Flammable.  Keep away from all sources of ignition during mixing, application and cure.  The Hardener and Base can cause eye and skin burns as well as allergic reactions.  Use goggles, fresh air masks or NIOSH approved respirators, protective skin cream and protective clothing.  This product is sold without warranty as to performance expressed or implied.  Users are urged to make their own tests to determine the suitability for their particular conditions.

What is E211 epoxy primer?

E211 is a high-performance epoxy primer designed to prepare concrete surfaces before applying epoxy coatings like E1820 Epoxy. It improves adhesion, seals porous concrete, and creates a uniform base for decorative and industrial floor systems.

👉 Think of it as the foundation layer that makes your entire epoxy system perform better and last longer.

Why should I use E211 primer with E1820 metallic epoxy?

Using E211 with E1820 is critical for achieving a professional metallic epoxy finish because it:

  • Seals porous concrete to prevent outgassing
  • Creates a smooth, uniform base for metallic pigments
  • Improves adhesion of the E1820 epoxy
  • Reduces air bubbles and pinholes
  • Enhances overall durability

👉 Skipping primer is one of the biggest causes of metallic epoxy failure or visual defects.

What does an epoxy primer actually do?

An epoxy primer acts as a bonding and sealing layer between the concrete and your coating system.

It:

  • Penetrates into the concrete surface
  • Locks down dust and weak material
  • Creates a non-porous surface for coatings

Once cured, epoxy primers form a tight, sealed surface that improves adhesion and coating performance.

Is E211 required before applying metallic epoxy?

While not always required, E211 is strongly recommended for metallic epoxy floors.

Without a primer, you risk:

  • Pinholes and bubbles
  • Uneven color movement
  • Poor adhesion
  • Increased material usage

👉 For metallic systems especially, primer = better visuals + fewer problems.

Can E211 help prevent bubbles in epoxy floors?

Yes. One of the main benefits of E211 is reducing outgassing, which causes bubbles.

Concrete naturally releases air. Without a primer:

  • Air escapes into your epoxy
  • Creates bubbles or craters

E211 seals the surface so the E1820 topcoat lays smooth and glass-like.

What surfaces can E211 be applied to?

E211 is designed for:

  • Concrete floors
  • Garage slabs
  • Basements
  • Commercial and industrial floors

Surface must be:

  • Mechanically profiled (CSP-2 to CSP-3)
  • Clean and dry
  • Free of contaminants like oil or grease

What is the coverage rate of E211 primer?

Coverage varies depending on surface porosity, but typically:

  • 220–290 sq ft per gallon

Porous concrete will absorb more, while smooth surfaces will get higher coverage. For quantity recommendations based on YOUR project reach out to us at 630-675-4509 or sales@exteriorcoatings.com.

How long before I can apply E1820 over E211?

Typical recoat window:

  • Within 12–24 hours for best chemical bond

If you exceed the recoat window:

  • Light sanding may be required before applying E1820

For free application consultation, reach out to us at 630-675-4509 or sales@exteriorcoatings.com.

Does E211 fill cracks or imperfections?

E211 can help fill small pores and pinholes, but it is not a crack filler.

For larger cracks:
👉 Use an epoxy crack filler before priming. Check out our Crack Repair section for further details.

Is E211 good for garage floors?

Yes—E211 is commonly used in:

  • Residential garages
  • Commercial garages
  • Showrooms

What happens if I skip primer before epoxy?

Skipping primer can lead to:

  • Bubbles and pinholes
  • Poor adhesion
  • Uneven finish
  • Premature failure

👉 For metallic epoxy, skipping primer is almost always a mistake.

Can E211 be used under other coatings besides E1820?

Yes—E211 works under:

  • Epoxy coatings
  • Quartz systems
  • Flake systems
  • Polyurethane or polyaspartic topcoats

It’s a universal primer for many floor systems.

Why is E211 the best primer for metallic epoxy floors?

E211 is ideal because it:

  • Works seamlessly with E1820
  • Provides excellent adhesion
  • Reduces defects in metallic systems
  • Creates a smooth, sealed surface

👉 It’s designed to help installers achieve high-end, professional metallic floors consistently.
