Vinyl Chips Flakes To Decorate Floor Coating

Decorative vinyl color chips/flakes are specially formulated paint aggregates used to enhance the aesthetic qualities of seamless epoxy, polyurea, polyaspartic and urethane resin-based flooring systems.  They can be used on commercial, residential and industrial floor projects. This unique product is random in shape, sized within a standardized range in 5 sizes (1″, 1/2″, 1/4″, 1/8″, 1/16″).

Shown below are 72 blended color combinations plus 100’s of additional factory blended styles. Chips/flakes are broadcast into colored epoxy, polyurea, polyaspartic or urethane base coating.  When the coating is tack free and ready to be re-coated, excess chips are cleaned off surface and one or two coats of a clear topcoat are applied. How thick or number of topcoats required depends on the amount of flakes used.  More flakes = more clear topcoats to properly cover.

Chips sold in 10 lb increments (up to 40 lbs/box).  How much to use depends on look desired.  The more chips the less you see of the basecoat color and more of the chips you see.  For a partial broadcast, apply chips at the rate of 1 lb chips per 20 sq’ to 200 sq’ of floor.  For full broadcast to refusal 1 lb chips covers 6-8 sq’ for 1/4″ chips and 5-7 sq’ for 1/8″ chips.  Full broadcast means chips applied so heavy the coating can’t absorb anymore and floor is no longer wet.

**Certain blends are stocked ready to ship in 40lb boxes. These blends are notated with a “QD” in Blend Gallery at the bottom of this page. Press CTRL F on your keyboard and type in QD to quickly find all of the flake blend options that are quick delivery. Ships in 40lb box minimum.**

**For Outdoor Projects Consider Using our Outdoor UV Resistant Blends. Otherwise, tone vinyl chip/flake colors offer longer term UV stability for outdoor applications.  However blends with intense, rich and bright colors such as Lime Green, Hot Pink, Dark Blue not recommended for outdoor use as they will fade and shift in color over 1-2 year period.  For all outdoor projects recommend a non-yellowing Aliphatic clear top coat for maximum UV stability.

Note:  Flake orders (excluding the stocked 40lb blends) are custom made at the time of order placement. Due to this, flake orders are NOT eligible for return. If you are not certain that you will like the selected flakes, please feel free to contact us to arrange a small sample.

Choose from 100’s of special order specialty chip/flake blends and solid colors or create your own custom blend in 10 lb increments using our SPECIAL ORDER CUSTOM FLAKE BROCHURE.    Select the color(s) you want by part number and name, the number of lbs of each color and flake diameter (1″, 1/2″, 1/4″, 1/8″, 1/16″, 1/32″).  Then choose the “CUSTOM COLOR” option in the drop down color selector above, the total # of lbs of flakes from the brochure.  Put your selection in the NOTES section at the bottom of the CHECKOUT PAGE.    Put what % of each chip color you want and make sure total adds to 100%.  Special custom blend orders allow 1 extra day to process.

What are vinyl chips/flakes and what are they used for?
Vinyl chips/flakes are decorative paint aggregates designed to be broadcast into resin-based floor coatings such as epoxy and polyaspartic. They add color, texture, and visual depth and are commonly used in garages, basements, patios, commercial spaces, warehouses, and showrooms.

How do vinyl chips/flakes work?
Vinyl flakes are broadcast into a wet base coat while it is still tacky. Once the coating cures, excess flakes are scraped and vacuumed, then sealed with one or more clear topcoats. The number of topcoats depends on the desired texture and level of encapsulation.

What sizes and colors are available?
Vinyl flakes are available in five sizes: 1”, 1/2”, 1/4”, 1/8”, and 1/16”. There are over 76 pre-mixed color blends available, along with custom blends, specialty options, and outdoor UV-stable blends. Custom blends are able to be done at no extra charge. How much product do I need?
Coverage depends on the broadcast rate and flake size.

• Full broadcast (see only flakes): approximately 6–8 sq ft per pound (1/4” size).
• Partial broadcast (see some epoxy): approximately 20–200 sq ft per pound, depending on density.

Heavier broadcasts require more product and additional clear topcoats.

Can vinyl flakes be used outdoors?
Yes. Standard vinyl flakes can be used outdoors but may fade over time due to UV exposure. For exterior applications, we recommend using Outdoor UV-Stable flake blends combined with a non-yellowing aliphatic clear topcoat. For our stock blends of outdoor UV flakes, Click Here.

Can I create a custom flake blend?
Yes. Custom blends can be created using selected colors and proportions (Click Here for the Create-A-Blend page). Custom blends are pre-mixed and shipped ready to use. Samples are recommended before placing large custom orders. Custom blends can be created at no extra cost. How are vinyl flakes packaged and shipped?
Flakes are typically sold in 10 lb boxes. Some stocked blends are available in 40 lb boxes for quicker delivery options (marked QD on our main flake page). Custom blends are made to order and are non-returnable.

Do vinyl flakes help hide imperfections?
Yes. Vinyl flakes help conceal minor surface imperfections, substrate flaws, and everyday wear while improving overall floor appearance. Full to heavy broadcast systems hide imperfections better than light to medium broadcast systems.

Do vinyl flakes change the floor texture?
After topcoating, floors can range from smooth to lightly textured depending on broadcast density and clear coat thickness. Optional anti-slip additives can be incorporated into the topcoat if additional traction is desired. Click Here for a list of anti-slip additives.
