Colored Natural Mica Flakes for Epoxy, Polyaspartic Floor Coatings | 18 Bold Transparent Colors | Accent Any Mica or Vinyl Flake Blend

Colored Mica Flakes offer a dramatic and bold accent addition to any Mica or Vinyl flake floor coating system.  Make your epoxy, polyaspartic or urethane flooring system glisten with dramatic transparent colors.  These unique natural flakes are made by using special transparent pigments to color our clear mica flakes which are derived from a group of sheet silicate minerals, called mica, which include muscovite, phlogopite, biotite, clintonite and others.

Due to the transparent nature of Colored Mica Flakes we suggest they be used as an accent to existing Mica Metallic Flakes or any Vinyl Flake Blend (if you do a full flake broadcast of just Colored Mica you’ll see the basecoat resin color coming through due to the transparent nature of the Colored Mica).  A typical accent of Colored Mica Flakes is 3% to 5% by weight of total flakes used, however can use more or less.

Colored Mica Flakes come in 18 solid colors in a 1/4″ size (4-8 mesh)  and can be mixed into any flake blend before broadcasting into any epoxy, polyaspartic or urethane coating (scroll down to pictures below).  They vary in thickness from 4 mils to 5 mils DFT (dry film thickness) ASTM D1005.  Colored Mica Flakes are sold in quantities of 1 lb, 5 lbs or 10 lbs.  How many lbs to use depends on look desired.

Note:  Flake orders are custom made at the time of order placement. Due to this, flake orders are NOT eligible for return. If you are not certain that you will like the selected flakes, please feel free to contact us to arrange a small sample.

How to Apply?

When using Colored Mica Flakes you need to apply 2 clear topcoats.  This is due to the lightweight nature of these flakes that causes them to not lie flat when broadcast unlike vinyl flakes.  Instead they will tend to stick up through your 1st clear topcoat.

When your basecoat with flakes is ready for the 1st topcoat, use a scraper to knock down the Colored Mica and other flakes in your system.  Apply 1st topcoat at 120 to 150 sq’/gallon depending on how much Colored Mica Flakes were applied.  When the 1st topcoat is ready to be topcoated, use a scraper and then industrial sander 60 to 100 grit to knock down remaining flakes still sticking up through 1st topcoat.  Apply 2nd topcoat at 200 to 250 sq’/gallon.

What are Colored Natural Mica Flakes?

Colored Natural Mica Flakes are decorative flooring additives made from natural mica silicate minerals that have been colored with transparent pigments. They add vibrant, translucent color accents to epoxy, polyaspartic, urethane, and other resinous floor coating systems.

How are these mica flakes different from vinyl flakes?

Unlike typical opaque vinyl flakes, colored mica flakes are transparent, which lets the basecoat color show through. This creates a unique, dynamic look when used as an accent.

How many colors and sizes are available?

These flakes come in 18 bold solid colors and are available in macro size (4-8 mesh, ~1/4″).

Can I mix them with other flake blends?

Yes! You can blend colored mica flakes with vinyl flakes, mica metallic flakes, or custom blends to achieve a custom decorative floor look. For pre-mixed blends of vinyl flake and colored mica flakes look at the page Mica Enhanced Flake Blend.

What is the recommended usage amount?

Because these flakes are transparent, they’re best used as an accent. A good starting point is about 3%–5% by weight of the total flake blend, though you can adjust based on your design goals.

How do you install these flakes in a flooring system?

  1. Broadcast the flakes into the basecoat while it’s still wet.

  2. After curing, scrape and knock down any flakes sticking up.

  3. Apply two clear topcoats:

    • First topcoat at ~120–150 sq ft/gallon

    • Second topcoat at ~200–250 sq ft/gallon
      The additional topcoat helps smooth and protect the lightweight flakes.

Can I return Colored Mica Flakes?
