Boat Pad Shines with DT-454 Decorative Epoxy, Full Flake Broadcast, 5500 Polyaspartic
DESCRIPTION
A customer in Jensen Beach, Florida wanted his 500 sq’ outdoor concrete Boat Pad to be the most unique one on the block. To achieve this goal, he decided to install a decorative epoxy system, utilizing a full flake broadcast.
The concrete was thoroughly prepared prior to beginning the project. To accomplish this, first all random cracks and holes in the concrete. Next, he used a concrete diamond grinder to abrade the concrete until the surface had the feel of 60-100 grit sandpaper. The purpose for using a diamond grinder is to ensure that the coatings will properly adhere to the concrete surface.
To begin the application process, he first applied 2 gallons of CMW 8000 Liquid Moisture Vapor Barrier with a handheld garden pump. This product helps to prevent moisture issues after application and is a very important step in outdoor system applications.
Next, he applied a basecoat of 100% DT-454 at approximately 138’ per gallon. The epoxy was pigmented with Sable Grey E-Poly pigment. Having a pigmented base helps to complement the flake blend chosen. While the epoxy was still wet, he applied a custom blend of 1/8” vinyl flakes to refusal, giving him a full broadcast.
Finally, he applied a clear protective topcoat of 87% solids 5500-EX Polyaspartic at 125’ per gallon. Into the 5500-EX, he mixed a slip resistance additive. The purpose of the clear protective topcoat is to fully encapsulate the flakes, protect the underlying surface and provide UV protection (Polyaspartics like the 5500-EX are aliphatic and will not yellow in sunlight)
