Garage/Workshop Dazzles with Decorative Epoxy, Full Flake Broadcast
DESCRIPTION
A customer in Jensen Beach, Florida wanted to redecorate their 750 sq’ Garage with a custom look. To achieve this goal, they decided to install a decorative epoxy system, utilizing a full flake broadcast and custom made decal in the center.
The concrete was thoroughly prepared prior to beginning the project. To accomplish this, first all random cracks and holes in the concrete were repaired. Next, they used a concrete diamond grinder to rough up the concrete until the surface had the feel of 60-100 grit sandpaper. A concrete diamond grinder helps ensure that the coatings will properly adhere to the concrete surface.
To begin the application process, they first applied CMW 8000 Liquid Moisture Vapor Barrier with a handheld garden pump in multiple wet on wet coats until it would not absorb anymore. This product penetrates deep into the concrete where a crystalline gel forms and fills small voids in the interior concrete, helping reduce potential peeling problems caused by moisture issues after application. CMW 8000 is also widely used in outdoor coating system applications where moisture issues are much more common.
Next, they applied a basecoat of 100% solids commercial grade DT-454 Epoxy at approximately 125 sq’ per gallon. The epoxy was pigmented with Sable Grey E-Poly pigment at the rate of 24 oz per 3 gallon kit. Having a pigmented basecoat helps to reduce the chance of the concrete color showing through the flakes. While the epoxy was still wet, they applied a custom blend of 1/8” vinyl flakes to refusal, giving them a full broadcast where you only see flakes.
Finally, they applied a clear protective topcoat of 87% solids 5500-EX Polyaspartic at 125 sq’ per gallon to fully encapsulate and protect the flakes protect the underlying surface and provide UV protection (the 5500-EX is aliphatic and will not yellow in sunlight). As all coating systems can be slippery when wet and they were very concerned about this, they used an aggressive aluminum oxide which was broadcast into the wet 5500-EX.
