New Outdoor Balcony Glows with Quartz Granules and 5500-EX Polyaspartic
DESCRIPTION
A contracting company in Miami, Florida was refurbishing a second story outdoor balcony for a client, replacing damaged wood supports and pouring a new concrete surface. The client wanted the balcony to have the look of a beautiful ocean with a safe slip resistant surface. To create this look and feel, the contractors decided to use a quartz granule broadcast system.
Since the project included new concrete, they finished the concrete with a broom/brush surface after pouring. This roughed up texture allowed for the base coating to easily adhere to the surface. If the concrete does not have this finish prior to basecoat application, a concrete diamond grinder is usually needed to achieve the correct texture (surface feels like a 60-80 grit sandpaper).
Next, a basecoat of 5500-EX Polyaspartic was applied at 120’ per gallon. While the base polyaspartic was still wet, they broadcast 50lbs of Quartz Granule in a solid color Q-1160 (Capri) until the surface was dry (to refusal). Then they applied an additional clear topcoat of 5500 at 120 sq’/gallon to fully encapsulate the granules and yet still allow the texture of the quartz granules to come through for a safer walking surface when the outdoor deck gets wet.
The quartz granule and polyaspartic coating system resulted in a great looking, UV resistant and non-yellowing anti-slip surface.
