MAZDA SPEED6 RACE CAR TRAILER & WOOD FLOOR COATING SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION
Husband and wife SCCA Solo race team Clint and Johanna were outfitting their new trailer and its plywood floor, looking for a high quality commercial grade floor coating system. They chose the HyperFLEX Epoxy as a clear flexible membrane basecoat and the Aspartic 85 Polyaspartic Fast Set as the protective topcoat colored with Metal Gray pigment.
The wood floor was sanded and cleaned prepared prior to application of product.
They applied one coat of the HyperFLEX Epoxy 100% solids Epoxy clear. The HyperFLEX is an exceptionally flexible epoxy coating, 150% elongation, great for use on projects where a flexible coating is required such as wood floors. HyperFLEX has a fast set 2 hour recoat time and is used as part of a one day coating system. The HyperFLEX was applied using a squeegee followed with a dry backroll using a 3/4″ nap roller.
The project was completed with a topcoat of the Aspartic 85 Polyaspartic pigmented in Metal Gray. The Aspartic 85 was applied using a quick dip and roll using a 3/8″ nap roller. The Aspartic 85 Polyaspartic was used to provide color to the system and for increased impact, abrasion and chemical resistance. To give the ramp portion at the back end of the trailer a different look, they only used 1/2 the recommended amount of Metal Gray pigment to give it a lighter semi transparent look which allowed some of the wood grain to show through.
Temperatures during application were 85F with 70% relative humidity which reduces working time of any 2 part coating, so to counteract this problem and slow down the fast setting HyperFLEX Epoxy, 5 oz of Acetone was added per gallon (MEK is better and Xylene solvent is best for slowing down working time of the HyperFLEX).
For an anti-slip surface, they chose the SSR-20 Polybeads which are mixed into the Aspartic 85 while mixing parts A and B together. The SSR-20 provides a nice anti slip surface while minimizing the change in surface appearance vs other anti slip additives and makes for the easiest cleaning.
