METALLICS EPOXY DRAMATICALLY ENHANCES GARAGE FLOOR
DESCRIPTION
Homeowner of 400 sq’ two car garage in Ft Worth, TX wanted to upgrade the looks of their floor. They selected a two color metallics marbled epoxy floor system manufactured by Floorguard Products and sold by Exterior Performance Coatings.
Below are the steps they followed:
Preparation – They repaired cracks in floor with a concrete patching material. Rented a single head electric concrete diamond grinder to rough up the surface and then used a power washer to rinse the dust off. After doing a moisture test on the floor using 2’x2′ heavy mil plastic (leaving down on floor for 48 hours and seeing moisture underneath), they confirmed there was a problem. They chose the CMW 8000 Moisture Vapor Barrier and sprayed two coats (wet on wet – 2nd coat applied while 1st coat damp) on the floor to reduce moisture vapor pressure to help reduce the chance of any problems from moisture rising up from under the concrete.
Step 1.) Applied HyperREZ UV Resistant Epoxy with solid color black pigment as primer at recommended 150 sq’/gallon. A solid color is key element in a metallics system as it aids the decorative look and black color is used in most metallics systems.
Step 2.) Applied HyperREZ UV Epoxy as basecoat at 65 sq’/gallon (recommend 50 to 75 sq’/gallon) which provides great looking depth. HyperREZ Epoxy is specified for use in all Floorguards’ metallic systems due to its durability, decorative look and excellent UV resistance. Two metallics colors were used with the HyperREZ Epoxy. Deep Blue metallics pigment was mixed into 1/2 the gallons and Maui Blue in the other 1/2. Application technique is key to getting a great looking metallics floor system. How you move the squeegee around the floor, backrolling and where you pour each of the metallic colors is where the artistic flair comes in. Possibilities are endless.
Step 3.) Applied Aspartic 85 Go Slow Clear Polyaspartic as topcoat at recommended 500 sq’/gallon. Aspartic 85 enhances looks with a nice high gloss, clear protective surface to provide increased protection for the metallics basecoat with excellent chemical & abrasion resistance and a non-yellowing aliphatic UV resistant topcoat.
