Elastomeric Filler Seals Electrical Junction with Bio-Chime E390
DESCRIPTION
At a major chemical processing facility, several electrical junction boxes were experience repeated sealant failures. The original sealant, a commercial grade silicone, had degraded under constant environmental exposures. This allowed moisture ingress risking electrical shorts, corrosion, and potential safety hazards.
Bio-Chime E390 a solvent free, elastomeric polysulfide coating, was selected for its chemical resistance, permanent flexibility , and exceptional adhesion. Designed to meet the performance standards of ASTM C920-18 Type NT, Bio-chime E390 offered a more durable alternative to silicone sealants while maintaining the elasticity and adhesion needed under chemical and environmental exposures.
The degraded silicone was mechanically removed, and the junction box flanges were cleaned and prepped with a light abrasive and solvent wipe to ensure maximum adhesion. Bio-Chime E390 was applied using a pneumatic caulking gun, forming a continuous seal around the junction box cover and cable entry points. The material’s non-sag formulation enabled clean application on vertical surfaces without running. The sealant was left to cure under ambient conditions, forming a flexible rubber-like seal that accommodated slight thermal and mechanical movement of the junction box.
The installation was quick, clean, and required little down time for the plant owner due to the quick curing properties of Bio-Chime E390. All parties were satisfied with the installation and performance of the coating with no reported changes over the fall, winter and summer temperature fluctuations.
