Elastomeric Filler Bio-Chime E390 For Concrete Tank Restoration
DESCRIPTION
A concrete storage tank at an industrial processing facility located along the Gulf of Mexico had been experiencing severe cracking due to age, thermal cycling, and soil movement. These cracks posed a risk of moisture ingress due to the proximity to the Gulf and potential leaking, threatening the structural integrity of the tank and violating safety and environmental compliance standards.
BIO-CHIME E390, a two-component, solvent-free polysulfide caulking material, was chosen for its excellent adhesion to concrete and outstanding resistance to hydrocarbons and water. To reinforce the repair and enhance protection against crack propagation and water
intrusion, fiberglass mesh tape was integrated into the sealing system. This composite approach provided both flexibility and strength, accommodating movement while sealing the substrate effectively.
The tank was drained and allowed to completely dry. Debris was swept and removed, foundation cracks were mechanically cleaned and pressure washed. BIO-CHIME E390 was applied using a brush and trowel, forming packing the cracks until level with the surface then
coating 3 inches on either side to seal the crack walls and incorporate fiberglass tape. The material’s putty like consistency and quick cure enabled easy application. The sealant was left to cure under ambient conditions, forming a flexible rubber-like seal that accommodated slight thermal and mechanical movement.
The installation was quick, clean, and minimized crew mobilization. The tank was ready for further lining application and ready to return to service under immersed conditions.
