Commercial Restroom Shines With Colorful Metallic Marbled Epoxy System
DESCRIPTION
A commercial establishment in Anchorage, Alaska wanted their tiled restroom to have a unique look. To accomplish this, they decided to apply a Metallic Marbled Epoxy system on top of the tile. While not a traditional use of this type of system, it created a one-of-a-kind beautiful look!
Prior to application, the tile needed to have enough texture for the Epoxy Basecoat to adhere to it. Failure to properly prepare the floor before application can lead to severe flaking issues once the product has cured. To accomplish this, they used an 80-grit sander to rough up the floor surface. They chose not to fill in the grout lines and therefore you can see them even after the coating system was applied.
Next, they applied a basecoat of HyperREZ Epoxy pigmented black to the tile. The epoxy was pigmented black to create a solid backdrop color and cover the tiles color. Then a thick 2nd coat of HyperREZ Clear Epoxy was applied, mixed with two containers of Metallic Pigment (one Red Burst and one Pearl) to create the metallic marbled look.
The final step was to apply a clear protective topcoat to the Metallic Epoxy base for additional impact, abrasion and chemical resistance. For this project, they used the 85% Solids Aspartic 85 Clear Polyaspartic. To prevent the risk of slips and falls (all polyaspartic coatings are slippery when wet), they added 20 grit polybeads to the topcoat during the mixing process. Polybeads are an excellent choice for adding texture to a coating system while altering the visual appearance less than any other slip resistance option.

HyperREZ Epoxy: A 3 gallon kit of 100% Solids HyperREZ Epoxy
E-Poly Pigment: A quart of Black E-Poly pigment added to the HyperREZ Epoxy to create a dark base for the system and hide the original tile color
Metallic Pigment: Two 4oz containers of Metallic Epoxy Color Pigment (one of Pearl and one of Red Burst)
Aspartic 85 Polyaspartic: A 1.5 Quart Kit of Aspartic 85 Polyaspartic
Anti-Slip Polybeads : 20 grit Polybeads mixed into the polyaspartic topcoat
