Product Use Instructions 

Surface Preparation

Bare Concrete: surfaces should be allowed to cure for a minimum of 20 days before coating. Excessive weak surface laitance must be removed by either acid etching or, preferably, abrasive sweeping before coating. Aged, uncoated concrete surfaces are best prepared by abrasive sweeping. Unless carried out properly acid etching can give unpredictable results due to inadequate etching or inadequate rinsing, for this reason abrasive blasting is the preferred method of preparation. Contamination by oil or grease should be removed with an industrial degreaser before either abrasive blasting or acid etching.

Steel: Most commonly used with fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) for structural reinforcement and sealing. When used with carbon fiber, it is recommend to apply an initial non-conductive seal coating or fiberglass layer to insulate the steel from possible cathodic effects. Prepare steel by abrasive blasting to SSPC-SP10, “Near White Blast” with a 2-4 mil anchor profile. Small areas may be prepared using mechanical tools such as needle scalers or abrasive discs.

Mixing Procedures

Bio-Seal 199 consists of a part A epoxy base and part B curing agent. Each component is filled in its own container and pre- measured to the correct volume quantity to produce the desired kit size when mixed together. To ensure proper mixing and use, add the full container of part B to the full container of part A. Remove as much material from the part B container as possible.

When using with sand or other inert aggregates as a mortar, first thoroughly mix the Bio-Seal E199 kit from previous instructions then pour into unused container. Using same mixer, pour aggregate slowly into mixed coating while stirring until desired viscosity is achieved. Bio-Seal E199 can be used with a roughly 2 parts epoxy to 3 parts aggregate ratio. This mortar can be used to smooth and level concrete, set safety railings into holes, and more. Addition of more sand will yield a stiffer mortar, which can be applied in heavy thickness without sagging.
Fine sand makes a stiffer mortar than coarse. Pot life and reaction time is heavily dependent on temperature. As a general guide, every 18°F above 77°F will half pot life and cure time.

− For smaller kits, mix vigorously with a stir stick. Scrape the corners and walls of the can to ensure there are no unmixed residues. Mixing vigorously for (1) – (2) minutes will assure uniformity and consistency.

− For larger kits, use a jiffy or paddle mixer with an electric drill. Mix for (2) minutes making sure to mix at the bottom and top of the container. Avoid incorporating air into the mix which may change the consistency to more to a foam with a
creamy, frothy color. Air bubbles will create a weaker, porous product and after application the air can separate leaving voids in the repair annulus.

(!) Unmixed residues in the containers, along the edges and seams, will never harden and cure.
(!) Heat is generated during the curing process. After mixing, immediately use product! Do not leave large volumes of mixed
material in drip pans or containers as these will rapidly cure and can heat to temperatures >200°F

USAGE ESTIMATE:

− On flat surfaces or when used for concrete saturation, estimate spreading at a film thickness of 5 mils (~300 sq.ft. per
gallon).
− When used for fabric saturation, estimate using 1 quart of material for every 20 square feet of fabric.
− When used as a void filler, 1 gallon of material will fill 231 cubic inches (0.133 cubic feet). Calculate volume by
multiplying length x width x height of the void space. Ask for calculation estimates if desired.

WORKING TIME: 

Temperature plays a major component in the working time and cure speed of epoxy coatings! Storage and environmental temperature will change the working time and cure time of the product. As a rule of thumb, every 18°F change in temperature will half or double
working time. A 30 minute working time at 75°F will become a 15 minute working time at 93°F and a 60 minute working time at 57°F. Expect significantly long return to service times at lower temperatures.

Application 

Brush or roller application is straightforward and requires no special technique. Application on a floor is assisted by using a squeegee to distribute the BIO-SEAL E199 then backrolling to achieve an even coating. The material will thicken in cold weather and will be noticeably heavier at temperatures of 50’F and below. If permissible to use solvent it will be found that 5 -10% of lacquer thinner or MEK will greatly reduce viscosity in cold weather allowing easier application.

When used as a sealer, take care not to over apply the product, which will result in areas of unabsorbed, glossy surface that will be slippery when wet. Note: should this occur it is possible to apply a thin coat of BIO-SEAL™ 199 followed by a light broadcast of 24 -36 mesh abrasive such as aluminum oxide or sand backrolled into the wet coating, this will yield an attractive, slip resistant surface. BIO-SEAL E199 applied over bare sheetrock for sealing and reinforcement may be over coated with latex paint as soon as absorption is complete as indicated by a complete loss of gloss over the sealed area.

When a glossy surface is desired over an absorbent substrate such as concrete or brick it will be necessary to apply at least two coats of BIO-SEAL 199. The first coat will penetrate and seal. After this seal coat has cured for about six hours minimum a “glaze coat” of BIO-SEAL E199 may be applied at about 5 mils thickness, (320 sq.ft. per gallon), to yield a tough, high gloss finish. A light broadcast of abrasive such as Aluminum Oxide or silica sand backrolled into this coat will provide enhanced slip resistance.

Once applied to wet surface, product can be submerged and cured under water. NOTE-  product cannot sustain wave movement until fully cured!
