Do You Need a Primer Before Applying Epoxy to a Concrete Floor?
In many cases, yes—but not every coating system requires one.
First, evaluate the condition of the concrete. Are there moisture concerns, existing coatings, adhesive residue or other challenging surface conditions? You should also consider the type of coating system you plan to install. These factors will ultimately determine whether a primer is needed and which type is appropriate.
Why Use an Epoxy Primer?
A primer can improve adhesion, seal porous concrete and create a more uniform surface for the epoxy base coat. It can also prevent porous areas from absorbing the coating unevenly, helping the base coat maintain more consistent coverage and appearance.
Primers may also reduce the risk of concrete outgassing or address specific conditions such as moisture, existing flooring and adhesive residue. However, the primer must be selected according to the condition of the surface and the complete flooring system being installed.
Selecting a Primer for Moisture Concerns
When moisture is a concern, it is important to determine whether moisture vapor is coming up through the concrete or whether the surface is simply damp during application.
If moisture is coming from beneath the slab, a moisture-mitigation product such as CMW 8000 or P3 Protect may be recommended. For damp concrete conditions, E155CL Moisture-Tolerant Epoxy Primer can provide a suitable base for compatible epoxy flooring systems.
Visible dampness alone does not fully diagnose a moisture-vapor concern. Proper moisture testing may be necessary before selecting a primer or coating system.
How Primers Help Reduce Outgassing
For flake systems with less than a full-flake broadcast, a primer is generally recommended to help reduce the risk of concrete outgassing.
What is outgassing? Concrete contains tiny pores that can release trapped air as temperatures rise. If this occurs while the epoxy is curing, bubbles or pinholes may form and leave the finished coating uneven.
Although outgassing occurs in only a small percentage of floor-coating projects—an estimated 3% to 5%—the risk may be greater with newer, porous concrete or when the temperature of the slab is rising rapidly. Correcting these defects can require significant rework.
To reduce this risk, we offer penetrating primers designed to seal the concrete surface and help prevent air from escaping into the epoxy. For properly prepared concrete, E5015 Epoxy Primer is our standard recommendation for many DIY flake floor systems.
Primers for Tile, VCT and Adhesive Residue
Specialty surfaces—including tile, VCT, old adhesive residue and certain asbestos-flooring renovation projects—require a primer designed for those conditions.
Perfect Primer provides excellent adhesion to many smooth or nonporous surfaces. When used as directed, it can also encapsulate qualifying intact asbestos-containing floor tiles and adhesive residues, allowing those materials to remain undisturbed while reducing surface-preparation time, expense and project completion time.
Suspected asbestos-containing materials should not be sanded, ground or otherwise disturbed. Always follow applicable regulations and consult a qualified asbestos professional when necessary.
Primer Does Not Replace Surface Preparation
A primer is not a substitute for proper surface preparation. Before applying any primer or coating, the concrete must be clean, structurally sound and prepared according to the requirements of the complete flooring system.
Applying a primer over dirt, oil, loose coatings or improperly prepared concrete will not correct the underlying problem. Always follow the preparation and application instructions for every product in the system.
Does Your Floor Need a Primer?
For many concrete floors, the answer is yes. However, the correct choice depends on the condition of the concrete, potential moisture concerns, the existing surface and the complete coating system being installed. Some systems, including certain full-flake broadcast systems, may be designed without a separate primer.
