Mica Metallic Flakes For Floor Coating Systems
Mica Metallic Flakes / Chips make resinous flooring glisten with natural crystalline beauty. These unique flakes are derived from a group of sheet silicate minerals, called mica, which include muscovite, phlogopite, biotite, clintonite and others. The mica family of minerals contain highly perfect basil cleavage. Through a highly technical manufacturing process, the distinctive hexagonal atom arrangement of the mica minerals is separated into sheet-like pieces, separated into natural color groups and broken down into standardized flakes sizes. These unique flakes provide a natural metallic luster that cannot be achieved with other engineered minerals.
Mica Flakes come in 18 different color blends, 7 Solid Colors and 3 different sizes (see pictures below which all show Macro Size unless othewise indicate) and can be broadcast into epoxy and polyaspartic coatings. They vary in thickness from 4 mils to 5 mils DFT (dry film thickness) ASTM D1005.
How much to use depends on the look desired. The more chips used the less you see of the base coat color and more you see the chips. Sizes indicated are not exact and vary within a range.

How to Apply?
For a partial broadcast, you can apply chips at the rate of 25 sq’ to 200 sq’ of floor coating per lb of chips. For full broadcast to refusal it takes substantially more, 17-20 sq’/lb of Large size, 15-17 sq’/lb of Macro sized chips and 13-15 sq’/lb of Micro sized chips. Full broadcast means chips are applied so heavy that the coating can’t absorb anymore and dry chips are sitting on the surface.
After initial broadcast, wait 10 minutes and if any wet spots develop, add additional chips until dry for an even looking finish. For full broadcast system recommend a clear epoxy as do not need to use a pigmented product. Use of Mica Metallic Chips requires a 2 topcoat process vs normal flakes as they do not lie as flat as vinyl chips will after being broadcast but tend to stick up randomly through the coating. When your basecoat is ready for the 1st topcoat, use a scraper to knock down the Mica Metallic Chips . Apply 1st topcoat at 120 to 150 sq’/gallon depending on how much Mica Metallic Chips was applied. Then when the 1st topcoat is ready to be topcoated, use a scraper and then industrial sander 60 to 100 grit to knock down remaining glitter still sticking up through 1st topcoat. Apply 2nd topcoat at 200 to 250 sq’/gallon.
